Back in July 2013, we surveyed contractors on Employee Benefits. Below is the result from one of the questions we asked:

Does your company offer a 401k matching program?

The majority (66%) of the contractors we surveyed said they currently did not offer any type of 401k matching program to their full-time employees. Of the 34% of contractors that indicated they did provide 401k matching, the most common matching contribution was 3 percent.

401k matching programs have proven to be a powerful employee retention tool for many businesses. Many companies’ 401K matching plans include a vesting period of at least 2-3 years, which requires employees to forgo a % of the employer matched funds in the account, if they leave the company prior to the conclusion of the vesting period. This gives employees incentive to stick around longer and the company reduces the risk of turnover which can be costly in terms of training and recruiting.
