“The Importance of Giving Back”

The HVAC industry is facing a workforce problem that's becoming a full-blown crisis: There simply aren't enough qualified employment candidates out there. And of the current workers out there, many are approaching retirement. What can be done?

Enter the EGIA Foundation. In this week's episode of Cracking the Code, host Weldon Long introduces the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that's dedicated to turning around the employment problem through scholarships and actively changing the industry's image. And Weldon talks with one of the Foundation's first scholarship recipients.

Plus, Weldon takes viewer question on how to deal with clients who take your diagnostic service -- which may be a low-price loss leader -- and then don't move forward with your company, and whether you should spiff service techs on leads or just closes.

On September 27 and 28, more than 400 contractors, business leaders, speakers, and other home services industry stakeholders descended upon the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas for two days of intensive learning, inspiration and best practices.

For the unrivaled event, EGIA welcomed legendary keynote speakers Aron Ralston of 127 Hours fame and human behavior expert Connie Podesta, with other presentations offered by industry luminaries Weldon Long, Drew Cameron, Gary Elekes, Josh and Paul Kelly, Mark Matteson and Mike Treas.

While that event is officially in the books, EPIC2019, scheduled for October 3-4 at the Bellagio of Las Vegas, is less than a year away and preregistration is now open! But don’t hesitate: this year’s event sold out three months in advance, and we anticipate next year's event will sell out even sooner.

QUESTION:
I am new to marketing through social media. What should the cost of generating a lead in the social media world be?

GARY ELEKES:
I think the answer to that question is twofold. One, social media isn’t really a lead generation type of system. I don’t think contractors should look at it as that; it’s a branding strategy. And that doesn’t mean you won’t get a lead from those types of media, it really is just not a place where you would expect to get a direct lead from – say, Facebook or YouTube or Instagram or LinkedIn or any of those types of channels. So social media is really about projecting your image, projecting a brand strategy, enforcing your brand promise...

In this month's Snapshot Survey, we're asking all about overcoming seasonality to learn what's working -- and what's not -- across the industry.

“Geo Fencing”

On ContractorConnect.org, Frank asked:

“I was made aware of 'Geo Fencing' by a marketing guy recently. He claims it works great for his customers and it would work great for me. (What else would he say??) I picture it working well for IAQ (fence every allergy clinic), but I’m having difficulty seeing it in HVAC AOR. Opinions? Anyone using it?”

In September 2018, we surveyed contractors on local events & home shows. Below is the result from one of the questions we asked:

How many local events does your company participate in per year?

While the vast majority of respondents indicated their companies do attend local events, the frequency of those events varied widely. Two local events per year was the leading response, by 20% of those surveyed, followed closely by four (17%) and three (16%) events. Events can be a great lead generation platform, but the exact number of local events a company engages in is less important than how they strategically fit into a company’s overall marketing budget, seasonal personnel availability and other considerations.

A service manager reviewing the week’s service records called me to report a tell-tale pattern he discovered. He found most technicians consistently repeat the same 10 to 15 repairs. Let’s take a look at the impact on your customers and company when technicians slip into autopilot and fail to search for performance-based solutions. …
