You can brainstorm the greatest company vision in the world. But without recruiting and retaining the right people to help you achieve that vision, your business can't thrive.

Weldon Long and Mark Matteson know the issues all too well. On this week's Cracking the Code, the two industry veterans and bestselling authors outline proven tactics for attracting and keeping the best people -- including leveraging referrals, working with trade schools, incentivizing and appreciating your people, and more!

Back in May 2013, we surveyed contractors on Credit Card Processing. Below is the result from one of the questions we asked:

What percentage of your customers pay with a credit card?

When we asked contractors who do accept credit cards what percentage of their customers paid them via credit card, 62% said that 0-20 percent of their customers used credit cards to pay for their projects. This data suggests that while a large percentage of homeowners require “non-cash” payment methods to pay for their home improvement projects, many of those same homeowners are reluctant to put large home improvement purchases on their credit cards due to the high interest rates normally associated with traditional credit cards and/or not having enough available credit on their cards to pay for the project.

To overcome this obstacle, every home improvement business should consider offering their own pre-arranged third-party financing solution which, more times than not, can provide homeowners with much more attractive rates & terms. EGIA offers many of these types of financing programs through our GEOSmart Financing Clearinghouse. To learn more, visit EGIA.org/geosmart.

QUESTION:
How often would you recommend debriefing performance with each of your service techs?

DREW CAMERON:
We debrief after each call. Meaning the technician has to call in and debrief obviously with the call taker or the dispatcher on each call. And then I’ll do one-on-one debriefing on their performance, not as a group...

“What Gets Measured Gets Done”

Where performance is measured, performance improves. But how do you know what to measure? And how can you use that measurement to ensure your performance -- salespeople, service techs, anyone -- is where it should be?

Mark Matteson explains that and more in the latest episode of Contractor Coffee Club. Plus, how the simple method Mark calls the "Hour of Power" can transform your day-to-day life -- personal and professional.
